taking stock of the future

hello, invisible people of the blogosphere. i'm alive this year too.

i spent my holidays and the new year over at Hong Kong. and i spent some time in Japan during december too. my camera's packed full of photos, so i guess i might do a photoblog of it later, it'll just take ages to sort them all out.

i've kinda been neglecting this blog for a bit, mainly because i'm not sure where i draw the line between things i share for myself and things i share for others. but as this new year kicks off, i realise that keeping a record of these passing days will help me see the future as well as the past.

most of my holidays have already dissappeared overseas in my HK/Japan trip. but the days left over have been busy with work for an indie game company, preparing for manuscript submission, and pushing myself to fill in the pages for my sketchbook project. but i've also been able to do a bit of reflecting and muddling through the stuff in my brain, trying to decide where i wanna go this year and beyond. i'm not actually scared of uni at all, though i might be later. and i got to spend a week with my brothers and sisters at a christian conference, growing closer to my Father and to each other, and preparing myself for my leadership role this year. i want to do my absolute best this year, to love fiercely, to lead wisely and to smile harder.

and i don't like to think of myself as a materialistic person, but i'm so grateful for all the things i've accumulated in my HK/Japan trip. these are the things that make me happy, that excite me for the year.

this is a graphics tablet my dad bought me. :) i've always been a traditional artist, but now i really have the opportunity to do some digital painting and CGing that i've always wanted to do. i still think that traditional work will be my favourite though, but i get very excited whenever i just look at the packaging on this box, haha.

these are my +1000 attack glasses. i guess they +vision too. okay, maybe these don't make me as happy as the other things in this list, but being able to see clearly is definitely a plus.

art supplies that i accumulated while over in hong kong. i'm especially happy with the fabric sealer which will help me with the shoe art i plan to do this year. i'm also planning to work with other materials, like canvas tote bags and pencil cases etc. and canson watercolour paper! i think i like canson watercolour paper the best, but my local eckersley's doesn't stock it. i know, what kind of art store doesn't stock canson? oh, and that pen on the top- that's actually a water-storing penbrush type thing. it'll really help in my watercolouring. there was a girl in my art class last year who had one and everyone was jealous.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's artbook Carmine.
i guess if you know me well, you'll know i absolutely love artbooks. i really, really do. i like to collect them, and i really want to collect works from all my favourite artists. but because my favourite artists are generally all Japanese mangaka I have to order them off the internet and shipping is expensive. so when i went to Japan, i was set on coming back with specific artbooks that i wanted.

i spent all the free time on our Japan tour scouring bookstores for this book. i was actually looking for Der Mond as well, but i really wanted Carmine because it was the newest. i had actually already given up on finding this book, because it was so hard to come by- then BAM! suddenly it was there- the one and only copy- in this giant bookstore in Tokyo on the very last day of the trip!

i absolutely adore Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. i love his art so much. i was extremely happy to see the artworks he did for The Girl who Leapt through Time. :)

Miho Takeoka's Bungaku Shoujo Galerie d'Art 1 & 2.
finding these two books was totally a lucky fluke. i hadn't been deliberately looking for these books but i had searched them up quite a while ago on the internet and thought of ordering them. it's funny, because now that i check the site i bookmarked, the store has shut down.

anyway, i found these books on the very first day of our Japan trip, in a bookstore at Shinsaibashi in Osaka. i had just found the anime artbook section and there they were! it was hilarious trying to communicate with the girl at the counter because she spoke no english, and we wanted to know if we had to pay tax and all that. then i tried out my hardcore "Ikura desu ka?" skills and she smiled at me before proceeding to tell me the price in japanese, which i didn't understand anyway.

i think what i love most about Miho Takeoka's work are the beautiful soft colours and watercoloury feel of everything. even though it's digital art, her painting is so watercolour-like, and i love watercolour, so therefore i love it.

i'm pretty damn inspired about it all, and i really plan on doing a lot more art this year and i hope to see a lot of improvement in it too!

and speaking of art, things i have to get off my lazy ass and work on:

my sketchbook project 2012 book! it's like not even half-full, and i'm supposed to send it off by the end of January. i'll make a proper post about this when i get around to it.

and these shoes here yo. both for family members, haha.

i'm feeling pretty good about 2012. so bring it on!
